Maybe you did a retrieval abroad and want your embryos closer to home. Maybe you have embryos frozen in the US and found a clinic overseas offering donor-egg or transfer pricing you can’t match locally. Either way, you are now researching one of the stranger logistics problems in modern medicine: moving frozen embryos across international borders, alive, at minus 196 degrees Celsius.
It is done routinely. But it is not cheap, not fast, and not something every clinic will agree to — and knowing the failure points in advance is the difference between a smooth transfer and a bureaucratic nightmare with your embryos sitting in a customs warehouse.
How Embryos Physically Travel
Frozen embryos move in a dry vapor shipper (often called a cryoshipper or dewar): a vacuum-insulated container charged with liquid nitrogen absorbed into an internal matrix, so there is no free liquid to spill. A properly charged shipper holds cryogenic temperature for roughly one to two weeks — far longer than any normal shipment takes. Most shippers travel with a temperature data logger that records the entire journey, and the receiving lab reviews that log before accepting the shipment.
Two service models exist:
- Specialist medical couriers. Companies whose entire business is transporting reproductive tissue. A courier hand-carries or directly manages the shipper door to door, handles customs paperwork, and maintains chain of custody. This is the standard and strongly recommended route for international moves.
- Clinic-to-clinic freight. Some clinics ship via general medical logistics carriers. Cheaper, but with weaker chain-of-custody guarantees and more customs risk. Many receiving labs abroad simply will not accept embryos that traveled this way.
The Paperwork Is the Hard Part
The physics of keeping embryos cold is solved. The paperwork is where shipments actually fail. Expect to need:
- Consent and release forms from the shipping clinic — signed by every person with legal rights to the embryos. If embryos were created with a partner, both signatures are required; divorced or separated couples can find this step genuinely difficult.
- Infectious disease screening results for everyone whose gametes contributed — HIV, hepatitis B and C, syphilis, and often HTLV, drawn within windows the receiving country specifies. Some countries require the screening to have been done before the embryos were created, which can disqualify older embryos entirely.
- Embryology documentation — freezing method (vitrification vs slow freeze), day of development, grading, straw or device identifiers, and lab accreditation details.
- Import permits where the destination country requires them. The receiving clinic normally drives this, but timelines vary from days to months.
- Donor documentation if donor gametes were used — and this is where things get restrictive. Countries with anonymity requirements, or bans on compensated donation, may refuse embryos created under a different framework.
What It Costs and How Long It Takes
Typical 2026 ranges for a specialist-courier international embryo shipment run from roughly $1,500 to $5,000+ depending on route, speed, and whether a courier hand-carries. Add the shipping clinic’s release/preparation fee and the receiving clinic’s acceptance/storage intake fee, each commonly a few hundred dollars. Budget the total move at $2,000–$6,000 all-in for most routes.
Timeline: two weeks to three months from first request to embryos on-site, driven almost entirely by paperwork — consent collection, screening verification, and any import permit. The physical journey itself is usually two to five days.
Thaw Survival After Transport
Vitrified embryos that stay at temperature survive transport well; a properly executed shipment does not meaningfully change thaw outcomes, and the data logger proves temperature was maintained. The honest caveat is inter-lab variability: the receiving lab is thawing material vitrified by someone else’s protocol, on someone else’s devices. Good labs handle this routinely, but it is fair to ask the receiving clinic two direct questions: how many externally vitrified embryos do you thaw per year, and what is your thaw survival rate for them?
When Shipping Beats Re-Cycling — and When It Doesn’t
Shipping existing embryos makes clear sense when you have several good-quality blastocysts and the alternative is a full new stimulation cycle. It makes less sense when you have a single low-grade embryo — the $2,000–$6,000 move plus transfer costs can approach the price of a fresh cycle abroad, without refreshing your odds. Run both numbers before defaulting to the emotional pull of the embryos you already have. A good clinic will help you make that comparison honestly.
