Metric 1: Live Birth Rate (Not Pregnancy Rate)

This is the single most important number — and the one clinics are most likely to obscure.

• Pregnancy rate: Percentage of transfers that result in a positive beta HCG test. This number is always higher because it includes biochemical pregnancies (positive tests that don't progress) and pregnancies that end in miscarriage.
• Clinical pregnancy rate: Percentage of transfers where a heartbeat is detected on ultrasound. Better than pregnancy rate, but still doesn't account for losses after the first trimester.
• Live birth rate: Percentage of transfers that result in a baby born alive. This is the only number that matters to you.

How to read success rate data

• Always ask for age-stratified data — a clinic's overall rate means nothing if their patient population skews younger (or older) than you.
• Compare per-transfer rates, not per-cycle or per-patient rates (which can be inflated by patients who do multiple transfers).
• Ask whether rates include PGT-A tested embryos only or all transfers — PGT-A naturally inflates per-transfer success rates because aneuploid embryos are excluded.

Metric 2: Laboratory Quality

The embryology lab is where IVF succeeds or fails. It's more important than the doctor's reputation, the clinic's décor, or the city it's in.

• Embryoscope / time-lapse monitoring: Allows continuous embryo observation without removing them from the incubator. Clinics with this technology can better select the strongest embryos.

• INVIMA registration: Colombia's regulatory body for medical devices and laboratories. Fertility labs should be INVIMA-registered.
• RedLara membership: Latin American IVF registry participation indicates the clinic is committed to outcomes transparency.
• Physician credentials: Reproductive endocrinologists should be board-certified specialists with fellowship training in reproductive medicine.

Metric 4: Financial Transparency

How a clinic handles pricing tells you a lot about how they handle patients.

• Green flags: All-inclusive pricing with a clear breakdown. Medication costs quoted upfront (or included). No "add-on" upselling during treatment. Written quote before you commit.
• Red flags: Vague "starting from" pricing. Add-on charges that appear after the cycle starts. No written estimate. Pressure to add services during emotional moments (e.g., "your embryos need assisted hatching or they might not implant").

Metric 5: Communication and Coordination

• Virtual consultation quality: Did the doctor review your records before the call, or are they reading them in real-time? A good clinic prepares.
• Response time: How quickly do they respond to emails and WhatsApp messages? During treatment, you'll need timely answers.
• English proficiency: Is the English spoken by the coordinator or the doctor? The person translating your treatment decisions should understand medical terminology — not just conversational English.
